I would like to monitor the individual hosts for hardware events. I have turned on snmp but I am having issues getting that working. I have also seen a thread on here using perl scripts but I don't even know where to begin on how to use those. Any advice?

What hardware your ESX servers are running? You might want to use the "SNMP agents for ESX" hopefully provided by your hardware vendor.
This requires to configure SNMP access to your ESX hosts.
A different solution is just to install the SNMP extensions but not to enable SNMP access. Vmware still "sees" the SNMP provides items and you can query these via the Perl SDK/API.
