How to configure Zabbix as trap receiver ?

    Hi,

I am new to Zabbix, and a student in Denmark to study/make a thesis regarding the monitoring tools available as open source.

Anyway, I try to look for a suggestion or steps on how to forward the alarms from our university test platform(a Solaris platform with SMS installed) to Zabbix Server. So far I have found many instructions, when I google Zabbix SNMP, but I am confused, is there any zabbix software need to be installed in our Solaris machine ?

Anyone can show me the best available instructions ?

    Please advise.

What *EXACTLY* do you want to achieve?
With "SMS" you do not mean "Shot Message Service" aka SMS as used in mobile phones I assume. Pls. do not use ambiguous terms ;-))

Do you mean that as soon an alarm is received on your solaris box you want to forward that to zabbix? You can use zabbix_sender for that. Install that on your solaris box, create a host on zabbix and let some solaris scripting do the job.

Obviously you want to hook in the "alerting" path of your existing monitoring solution. There must be some types of "notification" scripts which you can extend with a call to "zabbix_sender".

        Hi many thanks !!
Yes, its "Shot Message Service" platform

And yes, whatever alarm that pop up in our solaris box, or alarms from our SMS application, i want them to forward/send to the Zabbix server, and display in the Zabbix GUI.

I will proceed to install zabbix_sender in our solaris box, we have the host already setup in zabbix server. Whats next ?

Do you mind show me describe me the instructions ? or simply show me the link, so I can follow it ? Apologies for my lack understanding of Zabbix

Sorry, I meant "short message service", not SHOT, as described here.

So, you have alerts popping up in your solaris box. What is the system (software) that is used for showing these messages? Hook in there. Find the scripts which displays the alert and extend it/them with zabbix_sender.

SMS: what application generates the SMS messages? How do the alerts get into that application? Either hook in before they arrive on your SMS app or change the scripts that are used there.

Sorry, you need to give more details.

            Hi,

I tried to look for zabbix sender software but I couldn't find it, where I can download it ? Do you have the link ?
(OK, now I found it, its in the agents)

When you said hook in there with the scripts, how do I do that ? Is there any instructions online I can refer too ?

Many thanks for the instructions! Really appreciate it.

                Hi,

                1) The solaris box is running Solaris 10. Lets says I want to forward "dmesg" to Zabbix server, how do i do that ?

                2) The SMS application is internal application. I need to talk to our IT department to find out how the alerts get into the application.

How do I hook the alarms into Zabbix sender though ?

                Many thanks!

Write a script that parses the needed entries and count the number of occurences of these log entries.
                  Perl's File::Tail might help here.

When you have your desired number, send it to zabbix:
                  zabbix_sender -c /etc/zabbix_agentd.conf -z <your.zabbix.server> -s <your.host.for.the.value> -k <your.item.key> -o <the.item.value>

You're doing it the same way as shown above ;-)
