ifDescr in Discovery Rules and Graphs

    Hi All,

Was hoping someone might be able to help please ?

We have a multi module HP switch which we are using a Discovery template to add to Zabbix 2.2 running on Centos over SNMP. We are able to discover the ports using the #SNMPINDEX key, but these are numbered sequentially and not in line with the module letter and port number (i.e. A3). We have discovered that the ifDescr field contains the module name and number, but would like to link the ifDescr with port number so that when we request the ifInOctets and ifOutOctets data it has a more meaningful description ? Eventually we would like to be able to add this data to the graph prototypes we have configured.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer

I have defined my NIC discovery rules in the way that they output friendly names as #SNMPVALUE and of course the #SNMPINDEX.

The item prototypes use something like "Incoming traffic on interface {#SNMPVALUE}" for the "name" and "key" field. Only for SNMP OID I use {#SNMPINDEX}.

That works for Zabbix agent's dicovery rules as well, I use "#IFNAME" there.
