I'm running a Zabbix Server on a AZURE Cloud VM with Zabbix Proxies at multiple locations. I'd like to do syslog monitoring on some remote devices such as ATAs, routers, etc. I read the documentation but I'm still unclear how to tie all this together.

I think what I need is a piece of hardware running a syslog server that the the various devices report their logs to.The syslog server runs the Zabbix agent which is pointed to the proxy which reports to the Zabbix Server. Then each device I want to monitor is set up as a host on the Zabbix server.

Is this how it all works? Am I close?

In single sentence: using what goes to syslog things which you've listed is not the best/optimal.simplest way to implement the monitoring of those things.

The key thing I'm looking for is registration status and hook status of some ATAs and VOIP phones. How would you monitor these?

My need is to monitor some ATAs and VOIP phones at various locations. I am primarily concerned with knowing registrations status and on/off hook status. The research I've done to date leads me to believe that monitoring the logs of the individual devices with a syslog server is the best way to go about this. I'm not familiar with using a a syslog server and need some idea of how the components in such a monitoring system are related. I am open to alternatives,
