What is the source of the Zabbix Simple checks?

Simple question, what is the sources for Simple checks? Is it the server/host on which the zabbix agent is installed, or the proxy that it reports to?

    More details:

I have some firewalls and routers that I want to monitor using ICMP ping, and as such using the simple check item 'icmpping'. After adding one it failed. The IP I am monitoring is not reachable from the proxy, but is is reachable from the host under which I created the Item. I'm guessing it's failing because Zabbix is pinging it from the proxy, not the host.

Is that the case? Need a confirmation on that.

Secondly, where can I check/change the interval at which zabbix scans for new items that are created under a host?

    Thank You

The simple checks occur from the host they are configured on, in my experience

      Nope ..

"Zabbix server/proxy is responsible for the processing of simple checks (making external connections, etc)."

Thanks! What about the scan interval for new items? Where to check/change that?
