    Baffled By Triggers and Actions

I'm struggling to understand what I thought would be a simple ping and notification. I've been reading posts and suggestions just about all day today, and I have read a couple of Zabbix books, but I'm just not getting it.

I'm running 2.0.0 on CentOS. I am monitoring about 50 devices with SNMP, but until now have not used notifications. Today I wanted to set up an ICMPPING and have it notify me when the device goes down. At first I was getting one email a minute when the device was down. That's calmed down now, but I still don't understand what I'm doing.
    • The item key is "icmpping" with no parameters. The update interval on the item is 60 seconds.
    • This is my trigger: {Dan Test:icmpping.sum(#5)}<2
    • My action condition is "not in maintenance and trigger value = "PROBLEM"
    • My action operation is 1-0, 300 seconds send email.

Would what I described in the list work to send me an alert every five minutes? What if I want only one notification that a host is down?

Does 1,0 and 300 seconds mean do this every 300 seconds infinitely? If I set it to 1,1 and 300 seconds would it only fire one time?

I've played around with the step and duration values all day, and don't seem to be getting consistent results. Sorry to be the new guy asking silly questions, but I really have been reading for 12 hours trying to understand.

Sorry again to be asking such silly questions, but I'm missing something here. Can anyone point me to something that might help? I've searched and don't understand what I'm doing wrong with notifications.
