Modifying discovery rule prototype orphans data

This is an observation that I'm just looking to confirm this is by design. I made some changes to several trigger prototypes on a discovery rule (modified, did not delete them) for triggers that were not working correctly. It seems when the discovery rule ran again, Zabbix did not simply update the trigger definition, it deleted what was created for the host previously and created new triggers. However it did not delete the events associated to those triggers, they are still in the events table with the old triggerid (which is no longer there). Now I have lost all the history of that trigger, and have what is now orphaned data for an event with bad data (along with acknowledges, alerts, etc.)

Is this normal design/operation when making updates to templates?
