Maintenance on Groups and "Not in Maintenance" on Actions

Hope everyone is well!

Maintenance item:
- type = with data
- active since = 2018 / before today
- active until = 2020 / future
- periods > weekly on D day at T time for P period
- hosts/groups > group in maintenance = set to unique specific group

Action item (on triggers): Send message to users: Alerts via Email

If I put a condition on the action of "maintenance status: not in maintenance" when a problem occurs during the window we do not get ANY action triggered (all triggers are ignored, not just those in the group under maintenance).

Am I missing something / misusing this feature? Is the "not in maintenance" supposed to be a global (as it seems) and not granular (as I need)? How to workaround?

Apologies, I think this was actually something we'd done wrong, not entirely sure what yet but I get the feeling this is working as intended and can be ignored for now. Thanks.
