Confused really by the terms of Application, Templates and Host Group

I read zabbix documentation throughly but got nothing about those terms. What's the purpose of Application, Templates and Host Group(Accessed from web front-ends: Confuguration, Hosts, dropdown list right side), and how to use them?

Any help or hint would be appreciated.

A better explanation of Applications would be nice. I can create a new Application for particular host and then assign items from that host into this Application.

But then what? I don't understand the purpose of adding items to an Application.

I would assume that the idea is to cluster a number of items to a single Application and then it any of the items triggers then the Application would show as failing. But I don't have a clue of how to do this.

I defined three items, belonging to my application MyTestApp. When I view "Latest data"(Click Monitoring >> Latest data, select Group and Host from dropdown list right side), I found these items grouped by MyTestApp.

Currently the application are used only for:

1. Grouping in the Latest Data screen
2. User permissions. One may have permissions to see Oracle's data only.

Are there any plans to allow for applications to be used in to group items on screens? We currently host multiple customers on shared hardware and it would be nice to be able to create screens for each customer that show just there apps. I haven't been able to find a way to do this just yet.
