Can't get proxies to work (yes the names are the same) -- Zabbix 2.2

Jumping in here... I've read this thread with excitement as I sit in what appears to be the exact same situation. Lot of good tips here
Still haven't got it to work through, so I thought I might contribute with my setup, maybe we could find some common ground or something.
Ubuntu 12.04 with zabbix 2.0.4 mysql, behind a pfsense router with ports 10050 - 10055 redirected to ZS. Hosts directly connected to ZS works fine, both on LAN and remote networks. Hosts behind proxy does not:
Zabbix proxy running as package (zabbix24-proxy-2.4.3 pkg v0.8.3) on a pfsense customer router, pfsense v2.2-release.
I can see the proxy is active and seen recently (16 s ago at the moment).
Obviously checked hostnames, they are the same on agent and in host config on server. Also tried, in frustration, to fiddle around with trying external IP, internal IP, actual resolving DNS name and a fake name, it doesn't seem to make any difference.
Clinging to hope here!Comment

Me neither, but I don't seem to have a choice in the matter. 2.0.4 seems to be the last version available on Ubuntu (through packages that is, apt-get), and 2.4.3 is the one that gets downloaded on pfsense 2.2-release.
Perhaps there is a later version of the server available to build, haven't tried that.Comment

Okay, since I'm a Windows guy in foundation, I'm having a hard time getting my head around all this, but I managed to solve the issue at last.
First off, yes the versions played part. How I don't understand, since every unix guy I speak to is telling me unix is only text files, basically. Well, whatever.
I managed to crap out at least 5 times along the way, but in the end I upgraded my Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04, and Zabbix server 2.0.4 to 2.4.4 (what's with the 4's anyway?!). After that I configured my proxy and setup the agents behind the proxy to report everything to the proxy. And in Zabbix web I setup hosts with their *local* (LAN) IP (not external) and RATS! There it is after about an hours time.
I know you unix people think this is basic stuff but for us windows people it's difficult to understand even the most obvious ways. And I'm sure most of you unix guys are equally confused by windows sometimes (or at least I hope!).Comment
