    FreeNAS 9.2

    Hi.
I've been trying to monitor a FreeNAS 9.2 box from my Zabbix 2 Server using SNMP.

Didn't have much luck so far. The graphics are full of empty regions. In the zabbix log I see many SNMP timeout errors.

The Zabbix server is running on a qemu/kvm VM, the FreeNAS box is a real machine.

From the same server I monitor the network switch with SNMP and never had a problem.

It's not a very busy network, so I can't really blame it on dropping UDP packets.

FreeNAS 9.x does not allow me to install zabbix-agent on the OS file system. Additional software is supposed to run on jails. (not really a FreeBSD expert myself!!)

Should I try harder to install the zabbix-agent on FreeNAS? Will it be useful running within a jail? My understanding is it won't be able to monitor anything outside the jail, so not very useful.

Any suggestion on where to look for a solution would be very appreciated.
    Thanks

    Solved

I solved the SNMP timeout problems installing a zabbix proxy on the hypervisor that runs the Zabbix Server VM.

Now I'm monitoring the FreeNAS machine through the proxy, which can "talk" with the SAN network interface directly (not through the virtual bridge, as the VM would). The SNMP items are collecting data correctly and the graphs have no empty regions.

I checked the zabbix server graphs and the poller processes are ok, not starving, so I don't think this was a problem related with the VM HW resources. I guess the fact that the zabbix server is running on a VM have some consequences, which I don't fully understand right now.

      Hi,

If you need to run the Zabbix Agent on the FreeNAS, please take a look here on the FreeNAS forum: http://forums.freenas.org/index.php?...freenas.17695/

I've compiled a version of Zabbix Agent 2.2.2 to run on the FreeNAS applicance, and it contains some information on how to install it / automatically start.
