Unable to get host discovery working

Installation: Fresh v3.4 install on Ubuntu Bionic following the disastrous demise of the previous server. The fielded servers are running v1.8.5 of zabbix_sender.

Architecture: Servers in the field aggregate items from a network of attached embedded devices. The aggregation of items (text file) is sent to the Zabbix Server using zabbix_sender. We have defined three templates: Server, Embedded device type 1, Embedded device type 2.

    Problem:
From a backup of the previous configuration, we were able to restore the host information for the fielded servers. Each embedded device attached to the servers was "discoverable" by our previous server. However, on the new installation, I cannot make host discovery work. Here is what I have tried.

    1. Under Configuration/Discovery. Here the dialog insists on the specification of a "check", but does not offer a "zabbix trapper" option. The closest entry in the offered list is "TCP", but the resulting rule does not discover anything regardless of the IP specified.

    2. Under Configuration/Templates/<select one of our templates/Discovery Rules. The discovery rule dialog in this context insists on a "key" value, but then complains that the key is already represented in the template.

Is there a way that the Zabbix Server can be configured to discover hosts from the text file being sent to it by zabbix_sender?
