I am looking for an open source network monitoring system for an MSP that mainly deals with Windows and MacOS computers. I have used a wide variety of commercial products and I'm trying to find and open source project that covers my bases and to give me a platform to build on.
1. One of the features that I need is the ability to run commands on Windows machines remotely. These commands could be batch files and scripts or arbitrary commands entered as needed. They would be triggered either by some threshold or event otherwise manually triggered.
I.e. disk 90% full run batch file to delete temp folder. The output of any of these commands should hopefully show up in the dashboard with the device or in some log that can be confirmed. If not I have scripts that will email the resulting log to my helpdesk if that's not a possibility.
2. Another thing I'm looking for is a remote command prompt. Essentially, in a web page you would have an Interactive DOS prompt.
3. Finally, these would need to be done from a single server with no proxies or on site collectors or servers. I have a lot of networks that are small peer-to-peer Networks, and in most cases putting in my own box is not practical. So all of my monitoring needs to be done from the agent sending up to the server and then the actions coming through that interaction of agent to server.
I did some looking on the Forum and didn't find any particularly clear answers. I have looked at quite a few forms from quite variety of projects and I have found this forum to be the most friendly to newbie questions. If it turns out zabbix is not the fit and you have another recommendation I'm open to any information at this point. I live in Alaska, and the winter is starting soon, so I've got some cold dark days to fiddle around!
Thanks!
JP
