    Migrate to zabbix from HPOM

    HI Guys,
I am currently working on HPOM in a organization with thousands of servers.
Management wants to move to open source and their target is zabbix, but we are facing a few hurdles in migrating.
can you guys help me in getting answers to below questions , so that i can have a fair idea if we can move to zabbix
    1. In HPOM we have pre-developed smart plugins for SAP , Skype , Exchange , Remedy etc , how i can i get the same on zabbix , do we have to get these developed ?
    2. In HPOM we have different dashboards for different teams , can we have the same in zabbix
    3. Ours monitoring handles business critical apps and we need official support like we get in HP , how we can get that in zabbix ?

Guys I need some concrete points on basis of which i can convince management to go for it.

    Thanks

      Hi,

Sometimes people pick up topics and have replies, sometimes on more complex questions no one is obliged to reply as it may happen in such community forums.

In short here are brief answers to your questions.

      1. Plugins of HPOM are unlikely to work directly with Zabbix. They either must be rewritten for Zabbix or maybe Zabbix already has ways to get the data for the desired metrics or there is an easy way to create them. Also there is a good chance community solutions are already available. https://www.zabbix.com/integrations is a starting point as well as https://share.zabbix.com/. And just do a google search for e.g. "monitor insertyourapphere zabbix" and likely you will get something.

      2. Different dashboards for different teams is available in Zabbix. Very rich visualization capabilities are available. Check the documentation sub sections from here: https://www.zabbix.com/documentation.../visualisation

      3. Yes, for exactly these purposes you can turn to [email protected] and get official support for the product. https://www.zabbix.com/support

Hope this helps you to get the management happy.

        Hello.
It will be quite difficult. It will take a lot of time. But It can be done.

        1. You can use zabbix support. You can use free zabbix templates (SPI or policies analog) on https://share.zabbix.com. You can integrate zabbix to HPOM (Zabbix action - opcmsg - HPOM). You can integrate zabbix to HPBSM (HP connector to Zabbix). A lot of solutions.
HP opcmsg you can change on zabbix_sender. HP scripts on perl or VBS you can change and use in Zabbix. Each SPI contains several policies. Each policy contains several rules. And each rules should be transferred to Zabbiks.

        2. In Zabbix You can create screens, maps and dashboards. Each element can be configured permissions.

        3. https://www.zabbix.com/support

The easiest way is to integrate Zabbix into HP, and then slowly migrate various metrics with HP to Zabbix.
Only it is necessary to remember in HP the agent works. HP agent collects, processes and sends the finished result to the server. In Zabbix, the agent only collects metrics and sends them to the server, and the server already processes them.

This is a very big task and you will not consider all the details.

          Hi,
I've only just started to develope my Zabbix skills, but I do have quite a bit of experience with HPE / Micro Focus Operations Manager.

FWIW, I'd agree with Zadralo - I'd certainly start by integrating OM and Zabbix, just forwarding messages from OM to Zabbix.

To do this first step you might want to treat Zabbix as a "Trouble Ticket" system or a notification service. If you're using OMU/L version 9, then you can look at the OM admin guide, chapter 7, p273 or thereabouts to give you some guidance. You will effectively need to write a script that calls zabbix_sender to do it.

However, that will only get you a small way forward. Migration is not going to be easy !

Maybe a process along the lines below would help :
          1. Understand precisely which policies you currently use in OM.
There's a tool on the Micro Focus (ex. HPE) website here : https://marketplace.microfocus.com/i...ations-manager . This is simply 2 scripts that together will tell you which policies are really used.
          2. Research which Zabbix templates are available to meet your needs
Try looking here : https://monitoringartist.github.io/zabbix-searcher/ as a start.
          3. SPI's
If you use SPI's in OM, then don't forget that a SPI also includes actions and reports as well as policies. And don't forget that policies can have lots of different rules. You need to make sure that all the key scenarios are covered.
I don't believe there's any simple and automated way to migrate. You will have to go through your policies and replicate them in Zabbix. Some will be easier than others (SNMP policies, log file policies).

In a perfect world there would be a mechanism whereby you could use something like opccfgdwn to download the policies into a flat file (easy) and then convert them into Zabbix items / triggers etc etc. (Anyone fancy that project ??)

I'd be happy to discuss this a bit more with you - I'm genuinely interested in how you are progressing with this.

          Regards,
          D.
