Is it possible to monitor if my workstations are able to access my sql server?

Hi I am new to monitoring tools such as zabbix and is wondering if zabbix can monitor if my workstations is all turned on has connection to my sql server? It it aint much trouble how do I do it? A link doing this task would really be helpful.
Right now I manually monitor devices by having a separate monitor and opening a lot of command prompts and ping all devices.
It would be great if Zabbix can ping my devices one by one and alert me if a device cannot be pinged

Could you give us some more information ?

• Which Zabbix version are you using
• How are you monitoring your workstation (snmp, agent, agent active)
• Which SQL service (MySQL, MSSQL etc)
• What -exactly- do you want to monitor ?
  • Ping?
  • Running a query?
  • Checking if a service is running ?

Thanks a lot Mike for replying to my post. Sorry if my post lack info. I'm new to monitoring tools and I currently don't have any means to monitor the computers. I often just manually ping devices when they have hard time connecting to the server. We use MSSQL and haven't installed Zabbix yet. Still browsing the forums to learn more about Zabbix.
Is it possible to automize pinging devices in my network and alert me if one cannot be pinged? How can this be done? I am willing to install any needed software like snmp if it is needed by Zabbix.

That's absolutely not a problem, we all had to start somewhere

With Zabbix you can ping your workstation and MSSQL server. You can also monitor your MSSQL server for all kinds of performance metrics like cpu load, memory load etc. Also you can get in depth perfomance from SQL like total number of queries, slow running queries, cache hit rate etc.
At this time I think it's best you start playing with the Zabbix appliance (https://www.zabbix.com/download_appliance). This, while not intended for production use, will get you up and running real quick and you can start learning Zabbix and monitoring stuff!

Thanks Mike2K. Looks like that's what I really need at the moment. Something that is already pre configured which may help make the learning curve to be easier. I will give this a try. Thanks a lot

heyMike2K if you can please suggest template to be used for ms sql server 2014, we just want to fetch sql parameters using zabbix agent & dont want to run any script on ms sql server itself. thank you.
