Root Access for Server?

I would assume that you need root access for the server?

Since the server must be a UNIX compat, can it be a virtual private server?

I was hoping to not have to setup an old laptop or something on BSD to run the server and have it connect from the office. It would make a great benefit from a usability standpoint to have it run on Windows 2003 server or XP. (Cygwin?)

I guess one way would be to install VMWare on an XP or 2003 box?

No, ZABBIX does not require 'root' access. Even when started as 'root', server and agents change their priviledges to normal user, usually 'zabbix'.

This is GREAT news for me! So I could have the ZABBIX server running on my shared hosting machine machine at iPowerWeb(FreeBSD 4.x), and have it monitor my dedicated server(s)?

PS: We have one domain with iPowerweb so that we can be contacted if the dedicated server(s) goes down. I would want ZABBIX on that server instead of our dedicated server(s) so the monitoring server would not be running on a server to be monitored for two reasons:
1. It would not be able to tell us it went down
2. The monitoring server would have some impact on the server load.

That works for me. I'm upgrading my dedicated server this weekend from FreeBSD 6.0 to 6.1 Over the next few weeks I will be looking into Apache versions, MySQL versions, PHP caching, and FastCGI. Would you say that I should wait for these changes to settle down before implementing ZABBIX, or put in ZABBIX so that I can monitor the effects of the changes?

(The dedicated server has 6,000 to 10,000 users on-line at a time throughout the day. One of the domains is the 6th largest weather site, and another is used by various hotel chains, so I will want to jerk the server around as little as possible.)

When I read the install of the server it talks about shell access and loading deamons. That doesn't happen in a shared hosting environment like iPowerWeb. It looks more like VPS or dedicated is required to me. What am I missing?
