Monitoring Broadband Uptime

I have 13 sites, all with a zabbix proxy installed. At each site i would like to monitor the update of the broadband connection.

At the moment i've setup a simple ping at one of the sites that pings an external location. Trouble is i can't get % uptime for each site with a simple ping.

How would anyone else do this to allow me to get meaningful data from it?

I'd like to measure uptime, so i can have either a monthly or annual uptime percentage. At the moment i have a it reporting a 0 or 1 but i'm unsure on how to move it further than that.
