Hello Everyone
So we upgraded from 4.0 to 4.2 for the sole reason to have this new option where you can use the Hostname as Visible name in the configuration of the discovered hosts.
There are nearly no information on how it works or what is neccesary to get it working like it should.
This is all that is inside the What is New in 4.2 for this topic:
"Previously names of new hosts added as a result of network discovery were using either the DNS name or, in the absence of it, the IP address. In the new version it is possible to give much more descriptive naming to discovered hosts using discovery item values collected either from Zabbix agent or SNMP agent items"
[Picture same as I linked below]
"Zabbix agent or SNMP agent checks are listed as naming options in the new Host name and Visible name fields, in addition to the ability to specify DNS name or IP address as the name."
Do I understand that right that you should be able to make a zabbix agent check with something like (Zabbix agent "agent.hostname") and it should put the result of that item into the Visiblename or Hostname as I selected?
If I do that the Discovery will look into the segmented network and check if there are zabbix agents responding to the "agent.hostname", if they do my action will add them as host and into a group with some added Templates. BUT the Hostname is the one configured in the zabbix_agentd.conf under Hostname="Name here"
I cannot find any information on this since it's only been around for a short time. Any Tips regarding how it works, what it needs to work or even a way around, I would really appreciate.
Best Regards
Noah
