Zabbix alerting on itself

I have a Zabbix server that sends notifications on various events. If this server goes down, or the infrastructure used to send notifications fail, then obviously no notifications get sent.

As I understand it, in the previous releases of Zabbix (pre 2.4) the way around this was using nodes. But, as nodes are now being removed, what is the new way to handle these cases?

I usually just set up a secondary zabbix server to monitor the main zabbix server.

Otherwise you could just create some cron scripts that send out a notification when/if the zabbix server crashes, but I like to have that on a 2nd host just in case the host itself crashes.
