Active agent auto-registration criteria

I initially configured my Zabbix server with a sub-set of my hosts. I then configured active agent auto-registration and found that I had duplicates and sometime triplets show up for the originally configured hosts.

What criteria does Zabbix use when determining if an agent is "known" before auto-registering it?

I believe it's just based on hostname, so if you are changing the hostname of your server, or how the agent sends it to the server that could be your issue.

based on this comment in the manual I would believe it also to be the case though there might be a little more as well.

When agent is sending an auto-registration request to the server it sends its hostname. In some cases (for example, Amazon cloud nodes) a hostname is not enough for Zabbix server to differentiate discovered hosts. Host metadata can be optionally used to send other information from an agent to the server.

In general when I have noticed duplicates it's usually due to someone changing the case in the host name, or adding the domain to the hostname after the system was initially built.

Thank you for the response. In looking at how the agent sends the data, I see that some had FQDN where Zabbix did not, so looks like I had a configuration issue.
