Howto detect that an "active" agent is down?

I have a scenario with a Zabbix agent behind a firewall. The agent pushes data to zabbix server, all items are active. What if the agent crashes or the host goes down. What is the best strategy/technique to detect this in the Zabbix server?

The best way I have found is to setup nodata on your triggers for active items. If the entire server is active you may not want to enable nodata on all of the triggers, but at least one-two, or one massive no data that looks at all of your items

Thank you! I made an agent.ping item as "agent (active)", and setup a nodata trigger on it. And it works very well.
