zabbix_sender - sending information for hosts not managed by a particular proxy

I'm trying to use zabbix_sender to send information to a proxy. Is it possible to send information for hosts that are not monitored by that proxy?

The use case for this is an external script that can collect information from a central source, but the information pertains to several servers which are monitored by separate proxies. I want to push these values into Zabbix using a single zabbix_sender call. Is this possible?

It should be easy to test from the command line :-)

I think it will fail, as the proxy doesn't know the client.

Ah, yes - I should have said - I did actually try before posting but it doesn't work... I was hoping for a "you must use undocumented flag X" response :-)
