Two different items populates same inventory field

Hi,

Is it possible two have two different items in different templates to populate the same inventory field? I have multiple platforms that i collect data from with different type of query's lets say i want to collect serial number from platform X with OID X and serial number from platform Y with OID Y.

Or have i misunderstood how this should be done in a more proper way?
