    Host availability by ICMP ping

    Hi,

I'm new to Zabbix and like the product very much coming from Nagios.

I want to monitor a bunch of IoT devices running Tasmota. Obviously it is not possible to install a Zabbix agent or SNMP agent or something similar on the devices. Therefore the hosts are counted as unknown regarding the availability in dashboards.

Applying the ICMP template does not report the host as available or not available. From what I read on the internet it's only possible to determine availability by agent, SNMP, ICMP or JMX. But I cannot believe that my use case is so uncommon that there's no solution for it.

    Help me!

    Thanks, splitek.

Unfortunately all the checks that you mentioned will not influence whether a host is flagged as available or not availabe. Only ZBX, IPMI, JMX and SNMP allow that.

SNMP isn't agent based, it's network based. Most IoT devices allow SNMP nowadays, if you can set it up, you would then apply it to your template/host as Macro as far as I am aware. As I have never heard of Tasmota, I wouldn't be able to assist on that part. I currently monitor my WG firewall at home through my internal network and the SNMP community value is something you would setup on the Device.

I am still quite new to Zabbix myself, so maybe someone else with more experience would be better placed to assist you, but I am sure setting up the correct trigger over SNMP should work.

For those that might care about a code-based solution, check my other post on zabbix forum

This also serves a reminder when I inevitably come back here from Google search
