    Adding template to "host group"

Hey i see that when i go to host groups, many of the built in ones have a template attached.

what i want to do, is have a ping monitor on all my hosts in group "servers" for instance. Spent about an hour trying to get this going.

the way i think it works, and please correct me.

I make a host group. Configure the monitors i want for that (like ping) and then add hosts and add them to the group. They then inherrit any "templates" that i put on that host group.

But perhaps i am mis understanding how this works. The end goal will be any new host i add has the template "Template Module ICMP Ping" applied to it, rather than me having to go to each host and add it.

any help appreciated. I dont see this covered in the manual, and man i really cant puzzle it out, how templates are a "member of a host group"

thanks. i think you need the agent for that, but i am planning on not having any agents for the inital rollout. zenoss was fine with just using snmp. i only have about 300 devices i want to monitor so i will probably end up importing manually.

I might try getting it to scan certain IP ranges with ping and see how that works with autocreation of hosts. Will post back if i get a good method going.

Just to update. Discovering by IP address is working great. I think maybe i set the actions to apply after i had already run the discovery script, so the templates didnt auto add. Pretty easy to add using the "mass update" button. So thanks for that!
luckily most of my devices i want to monitor are in the same range of IP addresses. So its pretty easy to add everything by IP discovery for me. And i didnt have to type in any hosts manually. Now i just have to group them into host groups and add any that are in the dhcp space.

thanks again. really liking zabbix so far.
