    Need a notification if Servers go offline

    So here's my setup;

    I run the Zabbix Server on a MS Azure Cloud Server and monitor multiple sites. Each site has a Zabbix proxy that all the devices at that site report to and of course the proxies all report to the Zabbix Cloud Server.

    I recently had a couple of servers go down and didn't get a notification till they came back up. I need a way to get a notification when the server goes offline. I tried adding the ICMP Ping template to the Zabbix Hosts for the servers but it never returns data. So I'm guessing the Zabbix Cloud Server is unable to ping the Hosts. I wasn't sure how that worked. If the server pinged the host or the proxy pinged the host.

    At any rate can anyone recommend a good way to get a notification if a server goes offline?

    in zabbix you >>1<<< Server and maybe multiple proxies. when you talk about servers (>1) do you talk about zabbix client/agents or proxies or that one zabbix server ?
    if you want to check on the zabbix server if some proxies did not report back in in the last xx seconds then you can use item zabbix internal : zabbix[proxy,theproxynameyouuse,lastaccess]

      I should have been clearer, I am monitoring a Windows File Server and a Windows Domain Controller. I need to be notified if either go offline.

        well notification and other actions are evalutad and execute/started on the server... just create a host "windows Dc" put the name or ip in , save , add icmp default template , save. check problems view. do some reading on triggers, action, email configuration....

          So what originates the ICMP Ping, the Zabbix Server or Proxy?

            As you like .... when you "create a host" ... at the bottom of the first tab you have "monitored by" : empty = zabbix server , proxy name = proxy

            if you already have proxies around think of it as

            proxy will do checks, do the collection of metrics, get sensor values - talk to the outside world...
            server will just collect all info, digest it and make decisions and action, orchestrator like.

              Thank you for responding.

              I already had hosts created for these servers to monitor other properties and they are monitored by proxy. I added the ICMP default template but it doesn't seem to be getting ICMP Ping data.
