Hi,
First time poster and still somewhat new to Zabbix, but am loving it compared to my old Solar Winds Solution. I have about 12 remote branches with 5 to 40 devices per branch that I am monitoring. To do this I have a rabspberry PI with zabbix-proxy installed in Active mode at each branch. Am using Zabbix 5.0. Each PI proxy reports back to Main Zabbix server at HQ via vpn tunnel. Am struggling with best practice on how to monitor the proxy itself at each location. Here are my questions?
1. Do I have the agent on the proxy report to itself (ie in the zabbix_agend.conf file do I set the active and passive server to 127.0.0.1 and/or the ip of the PI )? OR do I have the agent on the proxy report back to HQ Server?
2. Should the PI Proxy agent be using active checks, passive checks or both?
3. Which templates should I use for the PI Proxy.? "Template OS Linux by Zabbix agent" is working for me now, but I also notice that there templates for "Template App Zabbix Proxy" and "Template App Remote Zabbix Proxy". Should I be using one of those? Which one?
4. I do not see anything in the above templates items and triggers that will alert me if the Proxy PI loses connection with the server. If the VPN goes down I would think I would be flooded with alerts that everything is down at that branch. What is best practice for getting alerts that a Proxy PI has gone down?
Sorry if that is too many questions for one post. In general my question is what is best practice and setup for monitoring a proxy at a remote location?
