Added a host + interface + template but nothing happens

I'm kind of new so maybe I'm missing the obvious, but I can't seem to figure this out.
I added a new device + an SNMP interface + the "Template SNMP Device" template, but seemingly nothing is happening. In the 'Configuration of hosts' section all the agent icons are greyed out and there is no mention of this hostname is either the server log or in the proxy log. (I have debug level logging enabled).
What else do I need to do to "start" collecting the data on this device?
I have other devices (using the Zabbix agent) that work fine.

How did you install your Zabbix server? From packages or did you compile it yourself? If you compiled it yourself, did you compile --with-netsnmp option?

If SNMP is enabled properly on your Zabbix server, did you enter all the information needed to access the SNMP device you want to monitor. If it is SNMPv3 you have to enter some passcode and other credential information for the items in the Zabbix SNMP template...

So eventually it started monitoring the device, but only after like 45 minutes. I had to increase the CacheSize parameters in the server config because it crashed, so maybe that's why it was slow. I'll keep watching if this problem continues.
