    SNMP MIBS Question

I have a Zabbix server (default sort of installation)

I see generic SNMP templates and they work great for various things.

I have a device that offers custom MIBS, my question is do I need to install those custom MIBS on the zabbix server to deal with this device properly? Would I just create items tied to oid's that seem to be tied to the custom MIBS? I have an snmp walk and I'm trying to figure out the best way to monitor the device but I'm a little new.

We use a script to generate the xml template file from the mib,

    see : https://github.com/cavaliercoder/mib2zabbix

make sure to check the items before releasing them to a host,
it could generate thousands of items.

This looks awesome. Thank you for sharing. Do I need to install the MIB package from the third party on my zabbix server for the generated template to work?

UPDATE: I got this and tested it with reading mibs so I'm excited to test the template generation. I think I just need to install the mibs downloaded package and comment out mibs in the snmp.conf and then add the custom mibs files to the right directory.

No after you generated the XML files, you do not need the MIBS on your zabbix server for it to work. Because is uses the OID directly to query the device.

I had high hopes but unfortunately it didn't work out for me. Perhaps the mib2zabbix needs updating to work with zabbix 5 or something.

Basically I got the MIBS I needed, generated a template with the tool and imported it. Pretty much everything had problems.. Discovery fails.. 1 item that worked seemed to report incorrect data.

I ended up scrapping it and using the generic snmp MIB templates included with zabbix. Not ideal but better than what I got with the generated template.

I asked the developer if it supports v5 or if he plans to update it to support v5.
