Zabbix mail not working

Hi,

I'm sure this problem has been seen over and over but my case is a bit baffling. It all used to work. Basically I have created an item (existence of a test files) and also successfully created a trigger which fires when that file is deleted. I configured an email to be sent when the trigger fire but it doesn't send. The issue shows up in the "last 20 issues" pane but the action tab shows action (Gmail), Status (not sent). I can successfully send an email from the command line simply by typing sendmail [email protected] </file and it arrives. It just doesn't work from the zabbix engine and I get these messages in the /tmp/zabbix.server.log file:

Currently Zabbix does not support SMTP authentication. Please see https://support.zabbix.com/browse/ZBXNEXT-679.
Gmail, as far as I know, does not accepts plain SMTP.

Current workaround is to use a script media type and send email from that script.

Well can anybody show me how to send an email. It worked before. I just need to have an email sent when a trigger fires and the documentation seems quite scant. I create the trigger, it fire but the action is that the email is NOT sent. What can I check?
