Get type of device in discovery

Hi. I'm completely new to the network monitoring world and Zabbix. I'm liking it very much so far but I would like help on how to do what I'm thinking.

I would like to see what kind of devices are on my network, such as iPhones, cameras, etc. Previously I would use an iPhone app called Fing which returned the DNS name, the ip, and the manufacturer. Is there a similar system I can set up in Zabbix?

I know very little about SNMP and OIDs so I need a lot of explanation. I think what I have to do is get discovery to find the devices via SNMP and then set an action that checks to see what kind of device it is, then adds it as a host with a generic template telling me what it is, and then set another action that removes the host when it goes down.

the problem is that I don't know if discovery is actually doing that. Plus I know very little about SNMP so I don't even know what version I should be using, what group I should be in, etc.

Plus, I'm using Zabbix 1.8 (I'll be using 2.2 eventually) so I don't know if what I am trying to do has to do with low level discovery, which seems to only be in 2.*

Would someone please show me how to set this up? Or show me a better way to do this?

Your help is appreciated. I really like zabbix and am enjoying it immensely

Hello and welcome to Zabbix forums!

I think at the beginning you should start off with simple network discovery as described here for 1.8: https://www.zabbix.com/documentation...auto-discovery

Then you will see what kind of devices you have and then slowly learn what types they are.

Low level discovery will not be helpful in this particular task as it is discovering resources on already monitored hosts (e.g. disk drives and network interfaces).

    Best Regards,
    Ingus

      ingus,

Thanks for your help. Would you know of any good online resources for learning SNMP? I'm guessing my problem comes down to lack of any knowledge on the subject.

        Hi,

You can use the web search to find some basic tutorials for SNMP. It took lots of time to understand it for me as well. I can't recommend anything in particular though.

But you can also learn a lot by reading the SNMP section in Zabbix documentation. https://www.zabbix.com/documentation...itemtypes/snmp

        Hope this helps!
