v5.2 packages for CentOS 8 but not CentOS 7

Is there a reason v5.2 has server packages available for CentOS v8 but not CentOS v7? Are they coming soon or is something else going on I am not aware of?

The reason I ask is that I got caught in the middle of a new install where I have one zabbix server on CE8 running v5.2 and some existing servers on CE7 that I can only get up to v5.0. I would prefer to have them all running the same version without having to install from source to do it.

It was decided not to package 5.2 for EL7 because EL7 has too old software, MySQL, PostgreSQL, PHP and most importantly, OpenSSL. The official statement and detailed explanation will be available in the blog that is coming really soon.

In addition, you may want to follow https://support.zabbix.com/browse/ZBX-18574

I understand the reasoning, but please convey to your coworkers that that really should have been communicated before or at the same time as the 5.2.0 release. Finding out long after the release is "suboptimal".

Everyone already got the point, this was discussed many times and the lessons were learned. Hopefully this won't happen again in the future.

Wait, so I will no longer be able to update CE7 servers from RPM packages any further than v5.0???

The problem with CE is they don't have an easy way to upgrade the OS in place like Debian does. If you guys are going to do stuff like this maybe you should consider making Debian the preferred default OS instead of CE.

I understand in general why you chose to not support CE7/RHEL7, but please understand these are frar from end-of-life. Modern versions of Postgresql and PHP and MySQL can be installed directly from the vendor's repositories. It should not be so difficult to modify the SPEC file to simply require versions that are greater than RHEL7 stock and to explain in a README how to install some of these other packages. I understand that openssl is still a problem in general, but are there specific openssl API calls or features that Zabbix uses and which are not found in openssl 1.0.x?

Migrating to RHEL8 is surprisingly difficult for us, since it involves a switch to an entirely new ecosystem, configuration deployment. I was really really hoping to avoid that.

Is this because 5.2 is not an LTS release by some chance? Will the next LTS release of Zabbix be available for CentOS v7?

It is unlikely that the next LTS release will support RHEL 7. Please also check the content of the blog article.

Does this affect only the server or agent packages too? If agent packages are affected that would be really bad, CentOS EOL is targeted for June 30, 2024 and we still have CentOS 7 servers....

The agent is irrelevant as it uses basic system calls and libraries.
