STOP THE COUNT!!! Wait... no, just stop polling, errr...

This seems like it should be very simple.
We have a template which uses SNMP polling to discover a bunch of stuff and uses item prototypes to build the items. That works fine...
We are now chasing some performance issues and thought we could stop the collection of data from hosts with this template applied, this doesn't work as expected.

I assumed I would just go to the template and disable discovery and creation on the discovery rule and item prototypes within that template, however it has been an hour, and I have restarted Zabbix, and it is still collecting data.

Is there something else I need to do?

    Thanks

I should say, that it is all the items created from item prototypes which we want to stop being polled, there are thousands of them so going page by page doesn't seem like a good idea, we don't really want to lose all the historical data so unlink and clear doesn't seem like a good idea? Or does the historical data persist when using unlink and clear?

You can do this by navigating to: Configuration -> Hosts -> pick any host -> Items -> put in search terms for whichever items you need disabled (also note the option for discovered items) -> mark all -> disable.
Since you have "thousands of them" you might need to do this a couple of times. To make this less tedious, you can filter item state by enabled and also go to Administration -> Users -> your user -> set rows per page to something bigger.

      Hope I could help.
