How do I handle the supplied templates?

How do I handle the supplied templates?

Should I clone these templates and customize the cloned versions and use them exclusively?

    I have Zabbix 5.2 installed.

When updating to 5.4 or 6.0, will the supplied templates be updated automatically?

    Thank you!

By supplied you mean installation supplied templates?
As I understand Zabbix documentation call these "out-of-the-box templates" as they "come preconfigured and thus are a useful way for speeding up the deployment of monitoring jobs."

Janlange, it seems to me that it is a matter of how you want to use your templates.

You can customize installation supplied templates however you want.
But, if you prefer, you can clone and change them to your liking as well.

My own preference is to avoid big generic templates that monitor everything from a system, like Windows template or Linux template.
If I need to create a new template, I try to link it to already existing templates.
Lets say I need to monitor SSH, HTTPS and MYSQL, then, the new template would be linked to those specific module templates.

    Check out some Zabbix documentation.

Maybe if you mess up some template and don't remember how it was configured, try downloading the official templates once again.

      Hello Markfree,

      thank you for your answer.

I'm new to zabbix and it is a fresh installation.
Accordingly, I'm thinking about how I can preserve the original templates to compare with the original in between if necessary. And have access to the originals when I update Zabbix.

Do you don't like the ootb templates? Why do you not want to monitor everything of standard parameters?

When possible, I usually avoid big templates.

For example "Template App Generic Java JMX". It has a lot of items I would probrably never use. Only a few of those items would be relevant to me. So, I source only what I need.

If you look at OOTB "Template Net Cisco IOS SNMPv2" you can see it has no items for itself. The template is linked to other templates that provide the monitoring entities.
That is something I would do while creating a new template.
In that sense, I often use OOTB templates.

Out-of-the-box templates come only with fresh install. If you modify those, they will not be overwritten during next upgrade and new ones also will not be installed during upgrades. I guess, its to avoid screwing up your mods. You can download and install them by yourself.
