Adding item value to discovered hosts' hostnames

I'm trying to append the system serial number for VMWare hypervisors to their hostnames in the discovered hosts section of the builtin template. I can fetch the serial number using an external check or the SNMP agent. How would I go about doing that?

I am not very familiar with that vmware monitoring stuff, but I think it may work only, if you can get that serial number during discovery and you add it already on prototype level. It is not possible later to change name of a host created by host prototype..
