Upgrading template from 4 to 5 without losing data

Hi to all, I've upgrade several months ago Zabbix Server from 4 to 5.
Now I would like to upgrade the linux template without losing history and trends of the actual items. It's possibile?

if you dont delete a host will not loose history data, just unlink and cleare a template and apply the new.
BUT i think if the new template is missing items then you will not be able to access the stored values.

Certainly you must have a staging environment to test before you continue in production
