MySQL DB full and cannot extend

I'm running the appliance 5.2 and collecting via windows agent and SNMP. Roughly 50 hosts total. At this point I can't even log into the web interface since the DB is totally full.

    [root@appliance log]# df -h /var/lib/mysql
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/sda5 4.5G 4.5G 20K 100% /var/lib/mysql

I've extended the disk in hyper-v so the space is available but when I try to extend it says there is an overlapping partition.

    (parted) resizepart
    Partition number? 5
Warning: Partition /dev/sda5 is being used. Are you sure you want to continue?
    Yes/No? yes
    End? [10.7GB]? 15000
    Error: Can't have overlapping partitions.

Is there a quick fix for this? It hasn't been collecting very long. I added most of the windows hosts in the last week.

Curious to know if you ever resolved this issue. I have run into the exact same problem and trying to figure out how to fix.

I created an account here to specifically post how I resolved this as I just ran into this issue using the provided Hyper-V appliance. I'm still learning Linux so there be wrong terminology here and I apologize in advance.

sda5 is contained in sda4, as sda4 is a extended volume. So you need to extend sda4 first, then you can extend sda5 inside of it. I ended booting GParted (https://gparted.org/) and doing the extensions that way.
