    Inventory Best Practices

I want to be able to record SNMP information in the Inventory that is not linked from the generic SNMP template. I can see how to do this, and have created some additional fields that are populating the inventory (which I am then feeding into my documentation system using the API).

My question is regarding best practices - should I create a new template with the required fields rather than adding elements to an existing template, then linking the new template to the generic SNMP one? Will this also ensure that updates don't over-write changes?

I looked through the documentation but didn’t see any reference to the best way to achieve what I am looking for.

    Thanks,

Thanks, Cyber - much appreciated. The generic template does query them, so I'll look at extending it to meet my needs.

If generic template already queries those thins, I would just update generic one to insert data to inventory. If those a completely different things, I would create separate template and link it to generic, so it would be installed and not forgotten. But then again... you can just add to generic also. Just a matter of taste or how you are used to do things...
Your templates will not be overwritten, if you upgrade Zabbix. I think new templates are installed only with fresh install...
