    Zabbix and MySQL License Question

    Hello,

a friend of mine wants to integrate Zabbix into his product that he is distributing to customers.

Of course he will not charge for the zabbix product. only for his own product as zabbix is open source.

However Zabbix is in his case using a MySQL Database. Does he need licenses for the MySQL Database if he distributes the product to other customers?

His product is not using the MySQL Database.... only zabbix.

He could still use postgres as there are no problems with the license in this case but as Zabbix is mainly used with the MySQL Database it would be nice if it doesn't cause any licensing problems.

    On the page it says:

For OEMs, ISVs, VARs and Other Distributors of Commercial Applications:
OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers), ISVs (Independent Software Vendors), VARs (Value Added Resellers) and other distributors that combine and distribute commercially licensed software with MySQL software and do not wish to distribute the source code for the commercially licensed software under version 2 of the GNU General Public License (the "GPL") must enter into a commercial license agreement with Oracle.

I guess he needs a license?

    Thanks for the replies!

    Best regards

You would be better asking Oracle that question. They own MySQL and do seek licensing fees from distributions that repackage MySQL.

You could also consider MariaDB which is 100% compatible with MySQL, and may have easier licensing. But again, you should probably follow up with them for the final answer.

No. As well Oracle does not provide any licensing MySQL services. It provides only paid support.
If you think that your type of business can thrive without support you don't need to buy it (you are not obligated to do this by license conditions).
