Upgrade from 4.4.10. to 5.4 not working.

After 3 days of trying to get zabbix updated from 4.4.10.to 5.4, I'm throwing in the towel and decided to ask for help on the forum.

Main problem: I get the error message "DB type "MYSQL" is not supported by current setup." at the frontend" when updating to 5.4.

    My current working setup is:

    - Zabbix 4.4.10
    - Debian GNU/Linux 9 (stretch)
    - MariaDB Server version: 10.1.48-MariaDB-0+deb9u2 Debian 9.13
    - PHP 7.2.34-22+0~20210604.62+debian9~1.gbpc4c454
    - Apache/2.4.25 (Debian)

    - I tried it first with the update instructions on the zabbix website, but that failed quickly. I got a bunch of database/server errors, but was able to solve those.
    - I tried updating MariaDB and php manually first followed by the zabbix update, but no dice.
    - I updated to debian 10 but that also didn't work.
    - Tried the trick with the a2dismod php7.0/a2enmod php7.4
    - Tried the missing phpmod thingy, but of course that didn't work either

I probably did a lot more things than that, but I'll let you know in the nice replies to this topic.

      zabbix-agent
      zabbix-apache-conf
      zabbix-frontend-phpl
      zabbix-get
      zabbix-release
      zabbix-server-mysql

Some more info: After I do the update, I get an error at the frontend that the minimum php version needs to be 7.2. When I set it to load php 7.2, I get the "DB type "MYSQL" is not supported error.

Zabbix is being downloaded over 4 000 000 times every year for a reason. Download and install Zabbix for free and try it yourself!

I don't see any packages for Zabbix server for Stretch, so you seem to be on your own if trying to install Zabbix 5.4 on that old system.

What I would do in that situation (= old OS and old Zabbix):
        • Backups, backups, backups
        • Uninstall all Zabbix components (this is because I think unpredictable results can occur if Zabbix packages are still on Stretch level while upgrading the OS)
        • Move the Zabbix configuration files to a safe place
        • Upgrade Stretch to Buster, check that everything went fine and especially MariaDB is running properly
        • Install Zabbix 5.4 components for Buster (using the default settings, do not refer to the existing Zabbix database in any way)
        • Stop all running Zabbix components
        • Restore the saved Zabbix configuration files, making any necessary changes for the 4.4 -> 5.4 case
        • Start the Zabbix server and restart the web server
        • Check Zabbix server logs to see that the database migration went fine and service started correctly
        • Start and check Zabbix agent and its logs
        • Check and fix things as needed
        • Ensure that the services are enabled to start automatically
