2 agents on same remote machine and VPN

    Hi everyone,

I just started with Zabbix last week and I still discovering its functionality.

So far - I have to say it's an amazing product. I got it working on remote sites too with active clients, even on my android (unofficial client).

In my environment, we have a lot of remote nodes behind NAT where we cannot apply port forwarding on them as well they usually don't have static external IPs. On each site, we have a tiny windows PC that is used to collect various data from different sources and logs them into our cloud system.

I want to monitor those tiny windows PC and send alerts when is offline or have any performance issues and check connectivity to those "child" nodes. So far I got it working with active clients and custom ping scripts that check - all that and all good so far. ( I'm not worried about child nodes right now)

But now I have a question about VPN and having 2x agents on that machine - 1x passive and 1x active. How do I configure this scenario:

    - 1x active agent will check VPN status and send some basic info to the server (got it working now)
    - 1x passive agent I want to use for VPN tunnel only (on Zabbix I'll have ping set up to check ping stats and general network queries on demand)

Do I have to configure 2x separate hosts in Zabbix or there is a possibility to link them inside one host and how to link each agent to the different template? Or what is the best practice with that kind of scenario?

Is it also possible to display in Zabbix IP of passive agent that is connected via VPN and update when DHCP decides to assign it to different IP? (later I want to use the Zabbix web interface for RDP connections - I hope it will be possible). I'm using Draytek to assign IP for testing but later VPN DHCP will be redirected to the internal windows DHCP server (different subnet etc.)

Or maybe SSH will be a better solution? but having in Zabbix client address as 127.0.0.1:10053 -54 -55 etc puts me off a bit and i rather have VPN's and real IP address of passive client

any tips/suggestions are welcome as I just started using Zabbix and probably there is a solution for it or some sort of workaround
Working...
