Dashboard time limits not reflected in text widget items

I have an item that is a text value collected every minute. It relates to processes running at a particular time. I have added this item to a dashboard that also contains graphs showing CPU usage, response times etc. When I select a date range on the dashboard the graphs change to show data from that time frame but the list remains with just the latest data showing so I can't refer to what the historical values were in that timeframe shown in the graphs. Am I doing something wrong? Any hints/tips appreciated
