    OID, discovery and templates

    Hello,

I just installed a ZABBIX appliance to monitor devices on the sites of my customers.

The appliance is running quite well, however... I'm a bit confused with the SNMP OIDs.

    Issues :
    - All SNMP logos of the hosts remain red (error : "Timeout while connecting to xx.xx.xx.xx:161").
    - Only a few items are discovered for each Windows server and Cisco switches/routers (all SNMP agents are of course Enabled, and "public" user has Read access)

I tested the SNMP of all these devices (with a SNMP tester), and I receive answers.

Therefore, I have some questions :
    - Which OID should be used for generix discovery (both Servers and Network devices) ?
    - Should I create a specific template for each type of device (Windows 2008, Windows 2012, Cisco SG300...) ? And, in this case, what should be the OID to configure in the template ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello and welcome to Zabbix forums!

You can try to increase the Timeout= setting in zabbix_server.conf file on your appliance. Set it to 30 seconds for testing and see if the timeout errors go away.

For monitored devices you can use some of already built in templates like Template SNMP Device or Template SNMP OS Windows.

Discovery you can use with any generic OID, like sysDescr (I don't remember numeric for that, please do snmpwalk on your device and check yourself).

    Best Regards,
    Ingus

      Hello Ingus,

      Thanks for your answer.

After having spent many hours during the W-E for rading manuals & forums and testing a lot, I found solutions to my issues.

There were 2 main issues :
      - Windows Firewall to open for ports 161 and 10050
      - Configuration of the SNMP community (including in the Zabbix macro)

Now, it is working fine, I can monitor my internal infrastructure and the customers servers and SNMP devices.

However, I'm a bit scared about the traffic generated on my Internet line.

Where can I configure the number of ICMP, SNMP and Agent queries per minute ?

      Kind regards,
      Athena

        Hello Athena,

        Glad you got this working.

I don't think you should be concerned about the amount of traffic but you can also monitor it in case you see high utilization there.

Queries per minute or in Zabbix terms "Update interval" you can set per each item individually. https://www.zabbix.com/documentation...fig/items/item

If you want to change it for more items at once, check out "Mass update" feature.

        Best Regards,
        Ingus

Thanks for this info, I will check which queries can be reduced.

I already configured about half of the infra, and Zabbix process 100 new values per second.

          Is it much ?

Zabbix is used in enterprises with 20,000 nvps and more. The main idea is that you monitor what is required for your company.

Also keep in mind that you don't necessarily need to monitor everything and everywhere.

Sure add more devices to your monitoring. But also keep an eye on Zabbix server performance and internal graphs as described e.g. in this article: https://www.zabbix.com/forum/showthread.php?t=47781

            Best Regards,
            Ingus

OK, I will closely monitor the performances and needs of Zabbix.

Thanks a lot for your help.
