Learning to build Templates

I have been using the basics of zabbix for over a year with basic SNMP graphing. I have started creating my own templates, but would like to know how to add a specific functionality to a specific template. So the template is for a fiber OLT. The fiber OLT has customers connected to it with fiber modems. I would like to find a way to add code, or find some good info on how to create a template that searches and finds the live modems, and takes specific values from snmp to add name to each item with specific values of the device in zabbix. So naturally I would have a handful of good info just for the OLT itself, and than

You need the MIB for the OLT, this will tell you what information is available via SNMP for that device. Then it will just be a discovery rule and item prototypes etc etc.
