How to get average ping times over set time period?

I've found the documation for calculated items, but where it says:

avg("Zabbix Server:zabbix[wcache,values]",600)

I don't understand which each section is. I understand the 600 means 10 minutes. But what do I put in the other sections to check for ping response times?

It also points out:

Note that extensive use of calculated items with long time periods may affect performance of Zabbix server.

How long, is too long?
