building a nntp trigger

Hey all this is my first attempt at extending my Zabbix install. I want to write a trigger that is tied to a SLA for some of my news farms. I want to have a trigger that will go out and connect up via NNTP and actually auth into the server and group in then exit with a status of good/bad on the return. Can anyone point me to a good source for me to get a better feel on writing triggers. The docs are a little lacking in this area and I need some more help.
