Basic ping check and trigger struggles

Hello, i'm trying to create a basic ping item and associated alert trigger. Im working on windows hosts and have access to the Zabbix front end , not the Linux box Zabbix server is installed on.

    What i've tried:
I've tried a simple check item, with a key of "icmpping[,,,,]". I tried adding values as well, but this item always returns value of 0.

I also created an "agent.ping" item of type "zabbix agent Active". This does return a value of 1 for hosts, however the problem is i seems to never return a 0. I turned off a host, and "last value" remained 0, even though that last check value was an hour ago.

What am i doing wrong? It can't be this difficult.

I used the ICMP Ping template that was included with my copy of Zabbix (v5.4). I linked the devices I wanted to that template and everything just worked.

Presumably you can ping the devices from your computer, but unless you get access to the Linux host you can't be certain that ping is working from the Zabbix server to the various Windows hosts.
