Effect of making changes on host directly instead of template?

I was wondering what happens to your host with a linked template after you have made a change to the host directly? For example, if I change a trigger severity on the host directly to disaster and the template default is warning. What will happen if I would change the template to high? Are the changes made on the host or does the host not inherit those new changes since I have already created a custom trigger when I first changed it.
