Best path to upgrade from 5.0 to 6.4 (or upcoming 7.0 LTS) on Centos 7

    Hello,

I'm seeking for best path to upgrade our current Zabbix 5.0 to the latest 6.4 ar upcoming 7.0 LTS. As I know even 5.4 version requires Centos 8 packages, so I can't really upgrade Centos 7 to 8. So currently I have two ideas in my head:

    1. Create fresh zabbix 6.4 installation on Centos 8, export hosts, templates from current 5.0 version and import to the fresh 6.4 installation. Never did this, so yeah, I believe it's a bit harder than I wrote.
    2. Create fresh zabbix 5.0 installation on Centos8, and then import hosts. templates from old 5.0 version. Then continue with upgrade procedures in documentation.

I would really appreciate your opinions and ideas, thank you

I would go with option 1... Just because I have done so .. (4.4 to 6) How hard it will be ... Depends on how complicated your setup is (all the HA-s etc..). But in essence, if you install a new version on new platform, import your old data with old schema (do not create new version schema) and then during first run, it will do all the upgrade procedures for you.
But you can go with option 2 also... I don't think they are too much different in "hardness"..
You will test on a test setup anyway.. right? So you will know, which one to prefer..

Thanks Yeah, it will be done on test env. If I understand it correctly, I should backup whole database with old schema on 5.0 version -> import it on new version and it should proceed with the DB schema upgrade?

Just do not create new DB with new schema initially. I don't know, what DB you are using, but I did it with PG. Exported all the data from old instance (4.4) I think it was PG10.5. New instance (for 6.0) was PG14. I recreated DB from 4.4 there, imported all the data... Then started up new server, it detected old DB version, available patches and then did all the things that were needed for upgrade.
