    Monitoring a printer (SNMP)

    Hi!
I'm studying the Zabbix aplication and after install, I've tried to improve some features. So, now I want to monitor some devices on my network, like a printer. The SNMP protocol is on and I have the MIB of my device, but I don't know the next step to start monitor my print, I wish start monitoring the ink level or something like and in the future create a action for that.

Someone know how I could proceed with that? My objetive it's know the ink levels on Zabbix, just that at the moment. I've followed some instructions in this forum, but now I'm little bit stuck.

    Thanks!

    [UPDATE]

I added the printer as host on Zabbix, but the icon are red with a message: "Timeout while connecting to localhost:161"
The IP are correct, MACRO, Community but I don't know how to proceed.

You can debug SNMP connectivity with the snmputils command line tools from your monitoring Zabbix proxy/server. Get that working before trying to monitor in Zabbix.

    Example: snmpwalk -v 2c -c Community <printer dns/ip>

Then you will have to find what SNMP values report ink or data you want to monitor. It will likely be an "enterprise" OID, and not returned in the simple walk above. (add the oid .1.3.6.1.4.1 to the above might work)

There are printer templates out there for the searching, some at https://www.zabbix.org/wiki/Zabbix_Templates#Printers

Time for standard debugging procedures, could be the printer isn't properly configured for SNMP, something is blocking the udp 161 traffic or the community isn't what you think it is.

Does the printer respond to SNMP from anywhere?

Can you nmap (nmap -A -T4 <ip>) the device from the zabbix server/proxy.

Do local firewall rules allow outbound udp 161 to the device?

          Hi!

So, the printer is responding on network and I've checked if the snmp is enabled in the equipament, but it's fine.

I used the nmap -A -T4 <ip> on Zabbix Server to Printer and the host is up, the right ports are open. There's something on server about the ports I could do?

          Thanks for your attention.

            Update!

I've created a new template for SNMP Protocol, insert a item for that and associate the host (in this case, the printer). Before change the community, the SNMP icon are green now!
So, where and how I could found the information to start collect the device informations like ink level, disponibility etc?

            Thanks for support!

Have you applied tempalte snmp device and it's working?

What is the make/model of the printer?

                Hi!

Probably teh best way is to check the printer admin manual and check which OID has the value you want to monitor.

If you give us more info about the manufacturer / model of your printer maybe we can help.

Have you tried creating an item with any oid of this page?

You have the instructions to create an snmp item here:

I've created an item and tried to insert an expecific OID, the SNMP icon still green (I guess this mean the printer are connected) but I don't understand where I could find or create kinda a graph to see finaly the data of this OID.

Go to Monitoring, latest data and select the host you are monitoring (the printer).

Do you see any value for the item you just created?
If so, you can create a Simple graph of that item in a new screen.

If theres no data maybe this oid is unsupported on this printer. You can che k this on Configuration - host and select items. At the end of the line of that item you will se if this new item you just created is ok or not supported.

                        Hope this helps!

Ah, okay! There's no data but I guess is the OID. I will change that, if I get progress, I will post.

                          Thanks for all support!

                            Guys,
I'm little bit confused about this process. So, I've found the MIB of my device on HP Website and opened the MIB file on Oidview software. I was searching for some OID parameters in this file but I really don't know where I put this information.
The OID number it's something like .1.3.6.3... etc, right? I put this on SNMP OID, but the SNMP icon turns to red...
I know, understand SNMP and how works are a little bit hard, but I don't know how to fix it.

                            Thanks for quick reply!
